Sony SRSX5 NFC Bluetooth Speaker Review

The market seems to be saturated with different kinds of speaker but there are only quite a few portable speakers which actually live up to the needs of a music enthusiast who want to take music with them anywhere. Is the Sony SRSX5 Portable NFC Bluetooth Wireless Speaker System a worthy speaker to consider buying? Does it have all the necessary things that you need in a portable speaker?

Sony has been in the industry for a very long time. They were the first portable music player in the world: The Walkman! In 1979, this became a hit. Being able to bring music with you anywhere you become an instant hit. The dawn of the walkman with its lightweight headphones and being able to play cassette tapes instantly became loved by many.  The Sony Group is the mother company which has ventured in so many electronic products which include televisions, tablets, phones, and now portable Bluetooth speakers. Surely, it has come a long way since its foundation in 1946 by Masaru Ibuka from Tokyo. It became a global phenomenon and now is still dominating the world in terms of electronics industry.

With the saturation of the wireless speakers in the market, Sony seems to get a hold of the pie by introducing their version of a portable speaker which is the SRSX5. It has a stand out and yet simple sleek design but promises to produce a powerful sound.

Simplicity of Design

Sony never went for complexity of design with this portable speaker. Unlike its other competitors in the market with their avant-garde designs like Jabra’s shoe like built of a portable speaker or  Ultimate Ears’ Boom portable speaker, this Sony speaker is designed like a box! There is no overdesign in the build of the speaker at all. In fact it is too simple. It is minimalistic and toned down in design. This can be either a good thing or a bad thing for the speaker. It has a rectangular look which weighs quite light for portability.

Out of the Box

Despite it simple looking design, it is packed with high technology. It is one of the best portable speakers out in the market in terms of performance. The sound quality is incomparably clear and crisp. No other portable speaker of this size can match the caliber of the Sony technology. Its connectivity is a breeze as well with its NFC capability and Bluetooth pairing.

  1. Clear and Rich Stereo Sound – The Sony SRSX5 is not the top of the line of Sony’s portable speaker product and only has the 2.1 channel with dual passive radiators for its speaker system but it delivers clear and crisp sound. Lows, mids and highs are clear at high level volumes. The simplicity of design is compensated with the quality of sound.
  2. Connectivity – connectivity is a breeze the Bluetooth and NFC capability of the device. You can easy connect your phone or media player as long as there are compatible.
  3. Ease of Use – There are no unnecessary features to the unit which makes it easy to use. The function buttons for the volume, connectivity, speaker phone are strategically positioned for user friendliness.
  4. Speakerphone capability – You can take and make calls with this capability. The sound from the other line is great and the mic from the speaker unit also picks up your voice quite well even at reasonably far distance.

  1. Not Waterproof or Water Resist – Although this speaker system is easy to carry with you anywhere, you have to think about protecting it from getting splashed with liquid. The unit seems hard to clean especially if juice or water spills on its mesh. You should think twice if you are taking it to the beach because of its non-resistance to water.
  2. Too simple of a design – The design is too simple which does not appeal to most consumers.
  3. Battery life – battery life is only up to 8 hours. Decent battery life but as compared to other portable speakers out there, this unit does not win under this category.

The speaker system itself already is a great buy for its sound. It is recommended for people who would want to take it with them in their office or any place where it is safe from water. Moisture from the beach can cause this unit to age and malfunction, although it seems tough enough to endure beach conditions, it would not be advisable to take it near the water because it is not water resistant. It has great sound which is the selling factor of the unit. It has great bass, treble and hiss which is a good reason enough for you to buy the speaker system. All in all, it is a great buy for people looking for a simple and yet quality sounding portable Bluetooth speaker.
